Prohibited Items Policy
Required before package promotion: weapons, hazardous materials, perishables, illegal items, regulated goods, medication policy, high-value items, and oversized items.
Effective Date: Upon publication | Applies to all ExpatPostal mail, package, pickup, coworking delivery, and special handling services
This policy must be published and linked before ExpatPostal promotes package access, U.S. retailer package pickup, coworking package delivery upgrades, or any package-related plan feature. Staff, ads, website copy, chatbot replies, and checkout language must not imply that every package is accepted.
1. Purpose and scope
This Prohibited Items Policy explains what ExpatPostal will not accept, what requires written approval before shipment, and what may happen if a prohibited, restricted, unsafe, oversized, abandoned, or unsuitable item is sent to an ExpatPostal address or service location.
This policy applies to all mail, packages, packages from U.S. retailers, coworking delivery upgrades, pickup services, sensitive item handling, special handling, return-to-sender requests, storage, release, and any item sent to or received through an ExpatPostal membership account.
2. Core rule
If an item could be illegal, unsafe, regulated, hazardous, perishable, medication-related, high-value, fragile, oversized, unusually heavy, commercial-volume, liquid, or sensitive, the member must contact ExpatPostal support and receive written approval before the package is shipped.
| Rule | Policy |
|---|---|
| No unrestricted package claims | Package promotions must not say or imply that ExpatPostal accepts all packages, large freight, medications, regulated goods, hazardous items, weapons, or international package forwarding. |
| Member responsibility | Members and senders are responsible for ensuring each item is legal, safe, properly shipped, properly addressed, and compliant with applicable postal, carrier, federal, state, and local rules. |
| Approval required when unsure | If an item may be regulated, high-value, medication-related, oversized, liquid, fragile, perishable, or unusual, the member must request written approval before sending it. |
| Refusal and disposal rights | ExpatPostal may refuse, hold, return, discard, destroy, report, or require pickup of any illegal, unsafe, restricted, prohibited, abandoned, or unsuitable item. |
| No international package forwarding | ExpatPostal does not provide international package forwarding. Eligible packages must follow plan limits, pickup, storage, coworking delivery, or approved special handling rules. |
3. Package eligibility is limited by plan and policy
A plan package allowance is not a guarantee that any specific item will be accepted. Every package must be legal, safe, properly shipped, within plan limits, within size and weight rules, within storage capacity, and consistent with this policy.
| Plan | Package rule |
|---|---|
| Buzón digital básico | No standard package allowance. Do not promote Basic as a package plan. Small sensitive item handling may be available only when approved. |
| Membresía Dorada | Up to 5 eligible packages per month, up to 15 lbs each, subject to this policy, package size rules, storage rules, and pickup availability. |
| Membresía Platino | Up to 10 eligible packages per month, up to 25 lbs each, subject to this policy, package size rules, storage rules, and pickup availability. |
| Membresía Premium | Up to 15 eligible packages per month, up to 50 lbs each, subject to this policy, package size rules, storage rules, and pickup availability. |
| Membresía del hogar | Up to 20 eligible packages per month, up to 50 lbs each, subject to this policy, package size rules, storage rules, and pickup availability. |
| Coworking Básico | Package delivery is not included by default. Package delivery or pickup is available only as an optional upgrade where eligible and approved. |
- Packages are stored for up to 5 days after notification. After that window, overage storage may be billed at the published daily rate unless ExpatPostal approves a different arrangement.
- All packages must fit inside a standard car trunk by length and width and must follow the applicable plan weight limit.
- ExpatPostal does not provide international package forwarding. Eligible packages must follow approved pickup, storage, coworking delivery, or special handling procedures.
4. Prohibited and restricted item categories
The examples below are not exhaustive. ExpatPostal may classify additional items as prohibited, restricted, or unsuitable based on law, postal rules, carrier rules, plan rules, storage capacity, safety concerns, fraud risk, or operating procedures.
| Item category | Rule |
|---|---|
| Weapons and ammunition | Prohibited. This includes firearms, firearm parts, frames or receivers, ghost gun kits, ammunition, magazines used for ammunition, explosives, fireworks, silencers, weapon accessories, stun devices, tactical weapons, dangerous knives, and any item designed or marketed as a weapon. |
| Hazardous materials and dangerous goods | Prohibited unless ExpatPostal expressly approves a specific item in writing and the item is legally transportable. Examples include explosives, compressed gases, aerosols, fuels, flammable liquids, paint, solvents, corrosives, oxidizers, toxic substances, pesticides, radioactive materials, regulated medical waste, biological hazards, and damaged or loose lithium batteries. |
| Illegal or illicit items | Prohibited. This includes controlled substances, illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, counterfeit goods, stolen goods, fraudulent documents, unauthorized identity documents, contraband, items connected to money laundering or fraud, and items prohibited by law or carrier/postal rules. |
| Perishables and organic material | Prohibited or restricted. Do not send food requiring refrigeration, fresh meat, seafood, dairy, produce, plants, seeds, soil, live animals, insects, biological samples, human or animal remains, or items that can leak, spoil, smell, attract pests, or create a health risk. |
| Regulated consumer goods | Restricted and generally not accepted without written approval. This includes alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, vaping products, cannabis, CBD or THC products, regulated supplements, age-restricted goods, gambling materials, and items requiring a license, permit, temperature control, age check, or regulated chain of custody. |
| Medication and health products | Restricted. Prescription medication, controlled medication, narcotics, compounded medication, temperature-sensitive medication, medical samples, and regulated medical devices must not be sent unless ExpatPostal gives written approval and the sender is legally authorized to ship the item under all applicable rules. ExpatPostal does not verify, store under medical conditions, forward internationally, or provide medical advice. |
| High-value items | Restricted and not recommended. Jewelry, precious metals, watches, luxury goods, collectibles, cash, gift cards, negotiable instruments, expensive electronics, and irreplaceable personal items require written approval before shipment. ExpatPostal is not a vault, insurer, appraisal service, armored carrier, or claims agent. |
| Oversized, overweight, or commercial freight | Prohibited if outside plan limits or operating capacity. Packages must fit inside a standard car trunk by length and width, follow plan weight limits, and be manageable for pickup or approved handling. Pallets, freight, furniture, appliances, bulk inventory, commercial-volume shipments, and multi-carton freight are not accepted. |
| Liquids, fragile goods, and leaking items | Restricted. Liquids, glass, cosmetics, oils, chemicals, fragrances, batteries, breakables, and items with leakage, odor, heat, corrosion, swelling, damage, or tampering may be refused, held, returned, destroyed, or escalated to support review. |
| Sensitive documents and cards | Not automatically prohibited, but not ordinary package items. Credit cards, debit cards, government IDs, driver licenses, checks, legal documents, and financial documents must follow approved sensitive item, Important Document Handling, Check Scan Service, pickup, or account procedures. |
5. Medication policy
Medication and health products create legal, safety, storage, and cross-border risk. ExpatPostal is not a pharmacy, medical shipper, temperature-controlled storage provider, health care provider, customs broker, or medical compliance service.
- Do not send prescription medication, controlled medication, narcotics, compounded medication, temperature-sensitive medication, medical samples, medical devices, or regulated health products without written approval from ExpatPostal before shipment.
- Controlled substances, illegal drugs, cannabis, THC products, and products prohibited by federal, state, postal, or carrier rules are prohibited, even if the item may be legal in a particular state or country.
- If a medication shipment is approved, approval only means ExpatPostal may receive and hold or release the package under the stated procedure. It does not mean ExpatPostal verifies legality, medical suitability, contents, temperature, expiration, dosage, or the sender's authority.
- ExpatPostal does not forward medication internationally, does not provide medical advice, and does not guarantee that any medication or health product can be received, held, returned, picked up, or released.
6. High-value items
High-value items are restricted and not recommended. Members should not send high-value or irreplaceable items to ExpatPostal unless written approval is received before shipment and the member accepts the risk of loss, theft, delay, refusal, return, or damage.
- Examples include jewelry, watches, precious metals, luxury goods, rare collectibles, cash, gift cards, negotiable instruments, high-value electronics, legal originals, and one-of-a-kind personal items.
- ExpatPostal does not provide vault storage, insurance, appraisal, declared-value coverage, armored transport, or guaranteed carrier claims support.
- The member is responsible for deciding whether to ship a high-value item, selecting an appropriate retailer or carrier, buying insurance where available, and arranging pickup or approved handling promptly.
7. Oversized, overweight, freight, and commercial-volume packages
ExpatPostal package access is intended for eligible member packages, not freight, warehousing, inventory storage, commercial distribution, furniture delivery, appliance delivery, or bulk logistics.
- Packages must fit inside a standard car trunk by length and width.
- Packages must follow the applicable plan weight limit: Gold up to 15 lbs each, Platinum up to 25 lbs each, Premium up to 50 lbs each, and Household up to 50 lbs each.
- Items that require pallets, forklifts, freight docks, special equipment, multiple handlers, climate control, special storage, or commercial receiving processes are not accepted.
- Bulk inventory, repeated commercial shipments, multiple cartons intended for resale, and any package volume that exceeds personal-use expectations may be refused or require a separate written arrangement.
8. Pre-approval process for restricted items
Written approval is required before a restricted, unusual, high-value, medication-related, fragile, liquid, large, heavy, or questionable item is shipped to ExpatPostal.
- Contact ExpatPostal support before the package is shipped.
- Provide the member name, plan, sender or retailer, item description, estimated value, dimensions, weight, carrier, tracking number if available, and requested handling method.
- Wait for written approval before sending the item. Verbal comments, marketing text, or plan limits are not approval for a restricted item.
- Keep written approval for your records. Approval may be limited to one shipment and may be revoked if the item differs from the description or violates any rule.
Written approval for one item does not create ongoing approval for future packages, different items, different senders, or items that differ from the description provided to ExpatPostal.
9. What happens if a prohibited or restricted item arrives
If an item appears prohibited, restricted, unsafe, oversized, abandoned, suspicious, leaking, damaged, unlawful, or unsuitable, ExpatPostal may take one or more of the following actions without guaranteeing a particular outcome:
- Refuse delivery when possible.
- Hold the item for review and contact the member for instructions.
- Require proof of eligibility, proof of legal shipment, payment of fees, pickup, return-to-sender, carrier pickup, or disposal instructions.
- Charge applicable storage, review, special handling, return, disposal, or administrative fees.
- Suspend package handling or terminate the account if the item creates risk or violates the Terms or this policy.
- Contact carriers, postal authorities, law enforcement, safety personnel, or regulatory agencies when legally required or when safety, fraud, contraband, or illegal activity is suspected.
The member is responsible for all costs, fees, penalties, return costs, disposal costs, storage fees, third-party claims, carrier claims, legal consequences, regulatory issues, and other losses caused by sending or attempting to send prohibited, restricted, unsafe, or noncompliant items.
10. Inspection, safety, and compliance review
ExpatPostal may review outer packaging, labels, sender information, carrier information, odor, leakage, visible damage, tampering, weight, size, storage conditions, and other visible indicators to decide whether an item may be accepted, held, refused, returned, escalated, or treated as prohibited.
- ExpatPostal generally does not inspect package contents unless legally allowed, operationally necessary, required for safety or compliance review, required by postal or carrier process, requested or authorized by the member, or required because the item is damaged, leaking, suspicious, abandoned, or unsafe.
- ExpatPostal may refuse to handle any item if opening, moving, storing, scanning, pickup, or release may create a legal, safety, health, privacy, security, fraud, or operational risk.
- ExpatPostal may cooperate with postal inspectors, carriers, law enforcement, regulatory agencies, or safety personnel when required or appropriate.
11. Member certification
By using ExpatPostal package, pickup, mail, coworking delivery, or special handling services, the member certifies that:
- Every item sent to ExpatPostal is lawful, safe, properly addressed, and compliant with applicable postal, carrier, federal, state, local, and ExpatPostal rules.
- The member will not send or cause any sender to send prohibited, restricted, illegal, hazardous, perishable, medication-related, oversized, or high-value items without required written approval.
- The member will pay all applicable fees and promptly follow pickup, return, disposal, verification, or support instructions.
- The member will not use ExpatPostal for unlawful, deceptive, fraudulent, unsafe, regulated, commercial-warehousing, freight-forwarding, or noncompliant activity.
12. Required website, checkout, and chatbot language
Before package promotion goes live, ExpatPostal should use clear disclaimer language anywhere package access is mentioned. Recommended short disclaimer:
Package access is available only for eligible members and eligible packages. All packages are subject to plan limits, size and weight limits, storage rules, pickup availability, prohibited-items rules, and support approval. ExpatPostal does not provide international package forwarding and does not accept illegal, hazardous, regulated, perishable, oversized, or unapproved medication items.
Launch checklist before package promotion:
- Publish this policy as a public website page before promoting package access.
- Add a link to the policy on package pages, plan/pricing pages, checkout, onboarding, FAQs, and sales scripts.
- Add a checkout or onboarding acknowledgement: "I agree not to send prohibited, restricted, oversized, hazardous, illegal, regulated, perishable, or unapproved medication items."
- Train the website chatbot and support team to route prohibited, medication, hazardous, oversized, high-value, and exception questions to a human.
- Do not advertise international package forwarding. State clearly that ExpatPostal does not provide international package forwarding.
- Do not advertise unlimited packages. State that package acceptance depends on plan limits, size/weight limits, storage rules, and this policy.
13. Abandoned, unclaimed, or unresolved items
An item may be treated as abandoned or unresolved if the member does not respond, does not pay required fees, does not complete pickup, does not provide proof or instructions, cancels the account, loses eligibility, or leaves the item after the storage or notice period.
- ExpatPostal may return, discard, shred, destroy, transfer for safety review, or otherwise resolve abandoned or unclaimed items as allowed by law, carrier rules, postal rules, account rules, and this policy.
- Sensitive or paper items may be securely destroyed to protect privacy when permitted by law and policy.
- Unpaid storage, disposal, return, special handling, or administrative fees may remain due even if the item is refused, returned, destroyed, or abandoned.
14. Policy updates and conflicts
ExpatPostal may update this policy from time to time. If this policy conflicts with the current Terms & Conditions, Privacy Policy, checkout terms, plan-specific rules, written support instructions, or a legally required process, the more specific or more current controlling document will apply.
This policy is an operational policy and not legal, tax, customs, medical, banking, regulatory, immigration, or financial advice. Members should consult qualified professionals when needed.
15. Questions and exception requests
For package eligibility, restricted item review, medication questions, high-value item requests, oversized item questions, prohibited item concerns, or exception requests, contact ExpatPostal support before the item is shipped.
